Fern, Wooden Chair Restoration

Restoration of the Fern sculptural wooden bench at NTU, sanding and re-varnishing the wood and removing rust from the metal components.

Material
Wood and metal
Location
North Spine Plaza, NTU, Singapore

If you've ever been fortunate enough to visit the beautiful campus at NTU you may have spotted a unique looking wooden chair at North Spine Plaza called Fern. This sculptural bench was inspired by the lush greenery of the NTU campus and designed as a functional piece of artwork.

Over the years the wood and metal has eroded through usage and environmental impact. We were engaged by NTU to help restore the metal and wooden elements in time for an upcoming event.

Due to the location and type of work we needed to hoard up the entire sculpture during the restoration. After this we sanded down the entire work, including removing rust that had built up across all the metal components.

After completion of sanding we applied various layers of varnish to restore and protect the wood. Below is a selection of images after restoration.
