This Chinese Ink on paper work was suffering from general discolouration of the paper and backing. This was evident with some small mould spots and the general creamy/yellow tone of the work and backing paper itself. The client was looking for someone to un-frame the scroll, restore the work, and then re-frame and deliver back to them.
After removal of the work we cleaned and then remounted onto a new backing. We also removed the old fabric backing from the plywood and added a new backing to give the work and frame a fresh, clean look.
You can see various stains and general build-up of dirt both in the backing fabric [far left of the image] and backing paper [outer edges of the main work].
If you focus on the backing paper you can see how this has gone from a yellow/creamy tone in the before images to a bright, clean white tone in the restored images below. This is because aside from cleaning the artwork itself, we have replaced and remounted the work on a new backing paper.
Also take note of the backing fabric in the framed shots where those stains and mould spots are gone. The original fabric has been removed and replaced.
