This November, Asian Art Platform is proud to present Spirit of the Apple, an interactive art installation by emerging sculptor Li Shudan, at the Singapore Affordable Art Fair 2024. Celebrating their 15th year in Singapore this years fair will continue to bring a diverse range of contemporary artworks from both local and international artists.
A Reflection on Peace and Nature
The installation features a visually compelling pile of over 280 meticulously hand-carved wooden apples. At first glance, the apples appear inviting, resembling freshly picked fruit stacked in an almost chaotic yet organic manner. Upon closer inspection, visitors discover that each apple is a handcrafted wooden sculpture, reflecting the juxtaposition of appearance and reality.
Li Shudan, known for his thoughtful exploration of environmental issues and personal stories through his sculptures, plays with the symbolism of fruits. In this installation, the apple—a universal symbol of life, temptation, and knowledge—takes on new meaning, as the “pile” becomes a metaphor for the layers of spiritual peace and contemplation. By invoking the fruit of the Spirit, Li invites the audience to reflect on deeper, more introspective themes such as growth, life, decay, and peace.
Interactive Experience
Visitors are encouraged to engage with the installation by adopting an apple for SGD 99. Each adopted piece becomes a part of the collector’s personal narrative, and a portion from each sale will be donated to a wonderful charity (Caregiving Welfare Association), reinforcing the installation’s message of communal good and peaceful impact.
About the Artist: Li Shudan (李树淡)
Born in 1994 in Shantou, Guangdong, Li Shudan graduated with a Master’s Degree in Sculpture from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2022. Li’s practice is rooted in wood and bronze sculptures, and he has become known for his intricate representations of fruits, which serve as symbols of life cycles, from growth to decay.
Through his works, Li tackles environmental concerns while weaving in personal memories and stories, connecting viewers to the cyclical nature of existence. His work bridges the gap between the personal and the universal, using familiar symbols like fruits to reflect on broader human experiences.
