Perhaps one of the most challenging restoration jobs we've had in regards to Chinese ink on paper was resorting a set of horses and calligraphy by artist Ai Xin Jue Luo Pu Zuo.
As you can see from the before images below the condition was unfortunately very bad but also an excellent case study in what can be achieved through effective restoration. Much of the top half of the work had bee so badly attacked by black mould that a significant portion of the calligraphy had been destroyed.
With the condition of the work and the need to remove it from the existing frame we also found that large portions of the artwork were unfortunately stuck to the glass, which created added complexity in safely removing the artwork and minimising any further damage.

After restoration
After a considerable effort we were able to effectively restore the artwork to a very comparable "as new" state. All mould has been removed and the painting has been remounted onto a new silk backing. The areas that were most severely impacted by the black mould have been completely renewed. This required a considerable amount of additional research and time to ensure that certain characters that had been completely lost to damage were correctly identified and implemented.
The results speak for themselves.
