This steel sculpture was created as part of SG50 and takes pride of place alongside the running track at NTU. Made from stainless steel by established artist Sun Yuli it measures 5.8m tall by 2.2m wide.
The sculpture was suffering from general build-up of dirt and staining caused primarily by the environment. There was dark black staining in various locations, especially on the base along with water staining and other surface dirt on the spirals. We were engaged to professional clean the sculpture and bring back its "shine".
Cleaning a sculpture such as this requires careful planning in terms of suitable access as well as selection and process of materials used. As you can see from the before and after photographs the end results were excellent.
Before
From a distance in photographs its challenging to truly appreciate the condition, but suffice to say that the sculpture was most definitely suffering from prolonged outdoor exposure to Singapores tough climate. You can appreciate some of the challenges and the end improvements via the close-up photos provided below.
Before
Heavy build up of dark areas around the joins and attached plates.
After
The black marks are removed and the stainless steel is significantly shinier.
